A friend of mine in college had a Karmann Ghia. He went home for the weekend to do some laundry and do some work on the car, He used the weekend to rebuild the carburetor, but he failed to install the gasket properly. He was a couple of hours from home, but only an hour away from school on Monday morning when it caught fire. Fortunately, he had his freshly washed comforter in the back seat with the rest of his laundry, so he grabbed it to smother the fire. Unfortunately, the comforter was mostly polyester and the heat of the fire melted it. The comforter formed a hard candy shell over the top of the engine. That’s when he called me for a tow.

It took him a couple of weeks to clean up the mess and rebuild the carburetor a second time.

Oof, self-immolation is my greatest fear with this car since air cooled VWs oh-so-enjoy doing it. Thankfully it’s pretty preventable by doing things like making sure the fuel system isn’t leaking, and that all of your gaskets are installed. That sounds like an absolute mess, but at least he managed to save the car!

She’s a beaut.

Everyone drools over lowlights but any nice clean running ghia is nice to see.

Wow, that started quite quickly if that was the first start of the year. I thought my 142 started easily after winter storage, but it needs a few more rounds on the starter than that! I think I’ll get that out in around 10 days.. Did the storage work out fine otherwise?

It was technically my second try, it wasn’t quite having it without the battery pack attached. Threw it on, got the result posted.

It’s way down on power and a bit temperamental at the moment, but I’m just chalking that up to teething pains while it wakes up, I’ll run some carb cleaner through it and do a full tuneup before I start to worry much.

I like to take some solace knowing that if a lowlight ever pulls up next to me at a light, at least I’ll be able to outrun him there! It’s not much, but it’s something

Ah okay. I think mine needs a few rounds just to pump gas back to the engine. Are you still running on the old gas that sat in the tank over winter, because that might cause a bit of temperament. Shouldn’t be an issue after a tuneup anyways.

Yeah, I definitely got that done on the first attempt. It’s the old gas, but it has stabilizer in it so it should be plenty good. I’m not too worried about it, she was running great before I put her away and nothing really could’ve happened between then and now.
